I’ve always had a love hate relationship with my skin, I bruise, scar and burn incredibly easily and I’m ridiculously pale. Over the years I’ve come to accept it with the help of some fake tan and a serious talk with myself, but in saying that I’ve always been happy with the skin on my face. I was very lucky to only have the occasional spots during my teenage years, although I did have a blinder on the tip of my nose once and 15 year old me thought this was the end of world!
But I was kind of lax with my skincare routine. Although I’d take my makeup off before bed it was with a facewipe, which these days I know does not take your makeup off properly. If you’re still using facewipes, please no more. They don’t get it all off and they’re bad for the planet!
As I’ve got older and those * fine lines and wrinkles* have started to appear I’ve been on the hunt for the best products for my skin. Dewy, glowing and youthful are all words I want people to think when they look at me and I have no shame in admitting this!
I’m happy to spend a little more if it works for my skin, but I also love a good bargain and I feel like I’ve got the best little routine going at a steal with none of the products I’m using costing more than £7! I’m sharing with you girlies incase you’re on the hunt for new products or are just a sucker for a new lotion and potion like me!
Cleanse and clean like a boss
I always double cleanse, I hate the feel of makeup being left on my skin when I’m getting into bed so this is my favourite way to do it. I use the Superdrug B.Pure Micellar Water first which costs £4.99 then follow with the Naturally Radiant hot cloth cleanser also from Superdrug. I was a Liz Earle fan from day dot, but at £17.00 for 100ml the price is steep. The Superdrug cleanser is a purse friendly £5.99 although Superdrug regularly have deals on and I picked up my last bottle for £2.95! Plus the bottle is 150ml so it’s a no brainer. The smell is lovely and my face feels completely clear of makeup after. It comes in a normal-dry skin formula. I have combination skin and it’s worked well particularly on my cheeks which tend to be quite dry.
Tone that skin girl!
I’ve tried a lot over the years and was never sure what I was using it for. Turns out toners help to reset your skin PH after cleansing, who knew! I’m currently using The Ordinary Glycolic Acid toner and I LOVE IT. My pores are insanely tiny now and my skin feels so smooth. Plus you get a giant 240ml bottle for less than £7.00. I bought my bottle in July and haven’t even used a third of it yet so it’s a total budget skincare buy.
To apply my toner I’ve been using these washable bamboo makeup remover pads as I’m trying to reduce how much I throw away at home. They’re so easy to use and I’ve found they do a great job of getting all my makeup off.
Crows feet? Nope
Eye cream, you’re all using it right? If not I’ve got the perfect starting product! My obsession with The Ordinary continues with their Caffeine Solution. It claims to reduce under eye bags and puffiness around the eye. I can vouch, it does work. Granted you may never be able to get rid of your eye bags completely without surgery but this does a damn good job of reducing them! The caffeine helps to constrict the blood vessels under your eye which in turn reduces the discolouration. It’s another bargain budget skincare item at a nice £5.80 per bottle which will last you months. You only need a tiny amount per eye as it’s an oily texture so a little goes a long way.
I’ve found that since using this the skin around my eyes is softer and looks much more taut.
Serums & moisturisers
Oh the minefield that is serums and moisturisers! I’m still a little confused as to what the difference is so basically I killed 2 birds with one stone and bought a 2 in 1! Now the skincare gurus of this world might say that this is shameful, but guys this is a budget skincare post so we’re working with what we’ve got and once again Superdrug have come up trumps! I’ve been using the Naturally Radiant 2 in 1 Serum & Moisturiser in the mornings. It costs £5.99 for a 100ml bottle and I really like the texture of it. Its not too heavy and gives a dewy finish.
In the evenings I use the Naturally Radiant Renewing Night Cream which is again £5.99 for a 100ml pot. It’s relatively thin for a night cream but clearly does it’s job as my skin feels soft and moisturised each morning!
Don’t wrinkle, wear suncream!
It didn’t feel right to do a skincare post without mentioning suncream. I’m pale, we’ve established that. Therefore if I don’t wear suncream I’m a lobster. I mean I am the girl that managed to burn her eyelid once. NEVER AGAIN. But shamefully, I’ve only recently started wearing suncream on my face on a daily basis. These days, even in the dead of winter your girl is slapping on the factor 50! It took me a while to find a product that didn’t make me oily or acted as a slip and slide for my foundation. But trusty Superdrug came to the rescue again and you’ll find me wearing their own brand Mattifying Face Fluid. It doesn’t make my face oily, it works great as a primer due to it being matte and it’s got a 5 star UVA rating. You get all of this for £3.99! Its a no brainer to protect yourself.
So there you have it, my favourite budget skincare products I’m currently using. As you can tell I’m a huge fan of Superdrug’s own range. They’re really affordable, smell lovely and don’t have any harsh chemicals in them. Plus at the time of writing Superdrug are having another buy one get one free sale on their own brand skincare products!
If you’re interested in looking at more products by The Ordinary they have a great user guide that tells you how to apply each of their products and their uses. You can see that here.
I’d love to know if you try any of the products mentioned or if you have any other skincare holy grail products!
